Both of Oregon’s native turtle species are listed as priority at-risk species. Here are some reasons:
Habitat Loss and Degradation:
Development and habitat alterations have severely impacted native turtle populations throughout Oregon and the Northwest. Turtles need areas with slow moving water and just the right vegetation.
Disturbance:
Turtles are skittish and easily disturbed by all kinds of human (and dog) activities.
Removal From the Wild:
People take turtles home as pets, even though they don’t make good pets.
