Turtle Species of Oregon

The following species are the most common in Oregon but others may be encountered. Check out the Turtle ID Tool to test your knowledge on identifying the most encountered turtles in Oregon.

Threats to Native Turtles

Both of Oregon’s native turtle species are listed as priority at-risk species. Here are some reasons:

Habitat Loss and Degradation:

Development and habitat alterations have severely impacted native turtle populations throughout Oregon and the Northwest. Turtles need areas with slow moving water and just the right vegetation.

Disturbance:

Turtles are skittish and easily disturbed by all kinds of human (and dog) activities.

Removal From the Wild:

People take turtles home as pets, even though they don’t make good pets.
